Adult Catechism

Adult catechism in the Catholic Church refers to educational programs and resources designed to provide systematic instruction in the teachings, beliefs, and practices of the Catholic faith for adults.

Overview

This form of catechesis aims to deepen the understanding of the faith, nurture spiritual growth, and help adults live more fully in accordance with Catholic teachings.

  1. Content: Adult catechism covers a broad range of topics, including the Creed (beliefs), Sacraments, moral principles, prayer, and the teachings of the Church. The content often follows the structure of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, providing a comprehensive guide to Catholic doctrine.

  2. Formats: Adult catechism programs can take various formats, including group classes, study groups, online courses, and self-directed study. Parishes, universities, and religious organizations often offer these programs to cater to the diverse needs and schedules of adults.

  3. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA): While RCIA is specifically designed for those seeking initiation into the Catholic Church, it also serves as a form of adult catechism. It includes catechetical instruction along with rituals and rites for individuals interested in becoming Catholic.

  4. Retreats and Workshops: Adult catechism may involve retreats, workshops, or seminars that provide intensive learning experiences, spiritual formation, and opportunities for reflection and discussion.

  5. Integration with Liturgical Seasons: Some adult catechism programs align with liturgical seasons, incorporating the Church calendar into the learning process. This integration enhances the connection between faith formation and the liturgical life of the Church.

  6. Resources: Adult catechism resources include books, study guides, online materials, and multimedia resources that cater to various learning preferences and levels of engagement.

The aim of adult catechism is not only to impart knowledge but also to foster a deep and personal encounter with Christ, leading to a mature and active faith life. These programs recognize that adults bring unique life experiences to their faith journey, and catechists strive to facilitate a meaningful and relevant exploration of Catholic teachings for adult learners.

From Our Catechists:

Dear Sisters and Brothers of St. Francis De Sales Parish,

Adult Faith Formation (AFF) has long maintained a tradition of convening twice monthly, fostering an environment of learning and spiritual growth for our parishioners. Over the years, our discussions have encompassed a wide array of topics central to the Catholic faith, including liturgy, theology, biblical studies, and catechesis. Past subjects have explored profound themes such as the problem of suffering, the existence of God, the Holy Trinity, the Incarnation, the Mass, sacraments, purgatory, the papacy, Marian doctrines, and the communion of saints. In addition to these educational endeavors, AFF has actively participated in and led novenas for our church feast, the Eucharistic Congress, and Divine Mercy Sunday celebrations.

As we recommence our gatherings, AFF remains committed to advancing the spiritual and intellectual formation of our parishioners. We warmly welcome all adults seeking to deepen their faith and cultivate a stronger relationship with Christ and His Blessed Mother, Mary.

Our upcoming curriculum will expand into new areas, including philosophy, spirituality, theology, and evangelization, along with other dimensions of Catholic life. Topics will range from Greek philosophy and the principles of logic to an exploration of the major Councils of the Church, beginning with the inaugural Council of Jerusalem. We are confident that individuals interested in truth, history, and thoughtful discourse will find these sessions intellectually stimulating, engaging, and enlightening.

In recent years, the fastest-growing religious identity in America and the West has been the so-called "Nones"—individuals who claim no affiliation with any organized religion. Many Christian communities have experienced significant declines as individuals turn to atheism, agnosticism, or self-defined moral frameworks. While various factors contribute to individuals leaving the Catholic Church, I firmly believe that a primary reason is a lack of understanding and appreciation for the richness of Catholic teaching and tradition. Those who genuinely grasp the depth and beauty of Catholic doctrine will find compelling reasons to remain within the Church. If you disagree, we invite you to join us, share your perspective, and engage in meaningful dialogue. At the very least, such exchanges may broaden our understanding and deepen our mutual respect.

Below is our schedule for 2025. We will continue to meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month (with the exception of our first meeting on January 29th) in the social hall. Our evenings will commence at 6:30 p.m. with a shared meal, followed by classes and discussions from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. We have successfully adhered to this schedule in the past and look forward to continuing this tradition.

For the remaining dates, we welcome

topics of interest from everyone.
